Dr. Florence Sheehan is a Research Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology at the University of Washington. In 2010 she began developing the first of what has become a line of simulators to teach diagnostic ultrasound. What’s unique about her simulators is that each has been the “first in the world” to offer a key feature. The simulator we will be discussing today is for transthoracic echocardiography or TTE. Dr. Sheehan’s TTE simulator actually has two innovations, not just one. Hers is the first to display real patient images, not just cartoons. And her simulator is the only one that gives immediate feedback to the trainee on how well they are doing. All of these simulators are made available through the company that she founded, Sheehan Medical LLC.
